- Pluracare L 1220 Copolymer forms a gel when mixed with water in concentration of 25% w/w or higher. The gels are crystal clear, chemically stable to acids, bases, oxidizing and reducing agents, stable in high and low pH, and compatible with high levels of electrolytes.
- There are two temperature regions at which the mixture is a liquid — a higher and a lower one. For example, a mixture of 25% w/w Pluracare L 1220 Copolymer and 75% water, will display a lower liquid region between 0 and 10 °C and the higher one between 80 and 100 °C.
- Working with Pluracare L 1220 Copolymer in the liquid regions facilitates the uniform dissolution of the product. High speed stirring will make the mixture of water and the copolymer foam, this foam is quite stable; it is therefore not recommended to apply excessive agitation.
- Once the gel is formed it can undergo reversible transitions from gel-to-liquid and vice versa. The concentration of Pluracare L 1220 Copolymer and the addition of other ingredients influence the temperatures that define its gel range.
- The addition of glycerin (10 - 30%) or electrolytes (0 - 8%) to the mixture will generally change its gelling properties such that the gel will not become liquid at lower temperatures. This unique feature of Pluracare L 1220 Copolymer makes it a suitable ingredient for formulations where conventional thickeners fail.

- Pluracare L 1220 Copolymer is used as a solubilizer for flavors and fragrances in aqueous and hydro-alcoholic systems, for instance mouthwashes. The chemical stability of the product makes it a strong candidate for gelling peroxide compositions ‘such as tooth-whitening gels.
- Pluracare L 1220 Copolymer is often used in combination with Pluracare L 4370 ‘Copolymer (PEG/PPG-38/8 Copolymer) to form anhydrous bases for personal care formulations, including toothpastes; both products having neutral taste.
- Mixtures of Pluracare L 1220 Copolymer and water form crystal clear, colorless gels. The properties of the gels are discussed in the paragraph below.
